The pattern is endless, with city maps morphing in and out of each other. Metropolis is woven from wool in European contract furniture quality, normally not available for retail.

“The city maps are from cities around the world – Helsinki, Berlin, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Moscow, Rome, Milan, Sydney, London, Lund, New York, Athens, Tokyo, Paris, Prague, Stockholm” – says Mårten Claesson from designers Claesson Koivisto Rune. “At first glance it’s just an abstract pattern. Then it begins to reveal itself. If you’re sharp, or a local of one of the cities, you might start recognizing streets and parks.”

Available in a vibrant green, cream white and blue.

marfa light https://smallerobjects.com/shop/luminous/marfa-light https://smallerobjects.com/shop/luminous/marfa-light#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 10:47:54 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=1433 In the land of the midnight sun, light and fire has an almost mythical meaning.

“A cherished tradition for us Scandinavians is to light garden torches in the afternoon or evening when guests are coming for dinner. Either in the garden or outside the door, the welcoming burning fames symbolizes festivities. We use them all year around, even though my favourite time of year is to light up my garden during long summer evenings”, says Eero Koivisto.

The garden torch in dark anthracite grey adds an aesthetic quality to any garden or park, either as a solitaire or in a formation. During daylight, the torch becomes a fine element in the outdoor room. The dark, almost black, colour also has a practical function – it is forgiving to the soot formed by burning. Before applying the powder-paint coating, the steel is entirely galvanized for rust protection.

The size of the container is optimized for the standard tin cup, 10 cm diameter garden candle known in Swedish as “marschall”, and in other parts of the world as “garden candle”, “windproof outdoor candle” or similar.

For outdoor use only. Garden candles are purchased separately.

Rod included. Base plate available as an option.

Made in Sweden.

stockholm new https://smallerobjects.com/shop/living/stockholm-new https://smallerobjects.com/shop/living/stockholm-new#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 14:23:23 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=994 This is classic typography with a contemporary twist, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune in collaboration with graphic design and branding agency BrittonBritton*. The digits 0–9 were originally designed as room numbers for the five-star Nobis Hotel** in Stockholm. They work equally well for the number of your house on your street. The feature is a tiny, yet very conscious, mismatch in size which stresses the natural variation of fired ceramics. Comes with mounting instructions. Available in semi-gloss cream white.

* Christina and Claes Britton are well-known media-making eminences in the Swedish capital and also long-time friends of Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. Between 1993 and 2002 Britton & Britton published the now legendary lifestyle magazine named Stockholm New – “The most clever and attractive magazine of the decade” according to Tyler Brûlé (founding editor-in-chief of Wallpaper and Monocle magazines).

** The contemporary-eccentric luxury Nobis Hotel was entirely designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune in 2010.

saddler’s tag – 2pcs https://smallerobjects.com/shop/personal/saddlers-tag-2pcs https://smallerobjects.com/shop/personal/saddlers-tag-2pcs#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 14:18:59 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=992 A personalized luggage tag in heavy-duty tooling leather, the same kind of leather used for horse riding equipment, by legendary Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden.

“We are travellers ourselves, and luggage to us is a very personal thing. The need to instantly identify our luggage on the carousel at the airport is something we share with one another,” says Ola Rune.

The Saddler’s Tag is a way to “tag” your own luggage.

The Saddler’s Tag is made of the highest quality full grain vegetable tanned leather from one of the world’s last original vegetable tanneries, Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden. The production process is entirely without chrome, fully ecological and hand made. The tag is ordered in a pair of two, in either black or natural leather. Within up to three lines you specify initials, name, telephone number or a salute. The letters are laser etched. On a black tag the lettering is very discrete. The natural tag will patinise beautifully.

Please note: Even if made in sturdy leather, luggage handling over time may tear or destroy anything.

IMPORTANT!
After your order you will receive an e-mail with information on how to provide your desired text on the tag.
If we cannot meet your requirements for the text your order will be credited.
Both tags will have the same text.

Made of the highest quality full grain vegetable tanned leather from one of the world’s last original vegetable tanneries, Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden. The production process is entirely without chrome, fully ecological and hand made.

Colours: Black (orange & pink thread) or tan (blue & yellow thread)

pesto https://smallerobjects.com/shop/kitchen-table/pesto https://smallerobjects.com/shop/kitchen-table/pesto#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 13:50:27 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=965 A mortar and pestle made by craftsmen in the ancient city of Altamura, right at the heel of the Italian boot. The mortar is solid and stands firmly on the countertop while handling the pestle. The sinuous bowl section eases the transfer of your freshly made pesto onto your spaghetti, and is as pleasing to the touch as it is to the eye. The satin polish makes it easy to clean.

The club end of the pestle is ideal for crushing and, if reversed, the handle end is ideal for grinding. When the pestle rests the handle end is stabilised by the soft curve of the mortar and aligns with the rim, avoiding sticking out and getting caught by your sleeve.

Sculptural to the point where you want to leave it permanently on your countertop.

parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme https://smallerobjects.com/shop/kitchen-table/parsley-sage-rosemary-thyme https://smallerobjects.com/shop/kitchen-table/parsley-sage-rosemary-thyme#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 13:47:43 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=962 Fresh herbs form a sensual component in many people’s kitchens in Sweden. “I enjoy cooking food at home and like to keep my herbs fresh and at arm’s length,” says Ola Rune. The herb pot holds the right amount of space for 2–3 herbs, and any excess water can easily be poured thanks to its integrated pouring rim.

In Scandinavia and around the world, fresh herbs plants are sold in simple black plastic containers, which of course best matches the dark soil inside. Hence, the Smaller Objects herb pot is glazed in matt black. Just slip the newly bought herb, with its container, into the herb pot for a quick and tidy result with no need to re-plant.

Please note that this is a handmade product and may vary in size and shape.

Keeps your hat uncompressed, free breathing and away from damage by the clutter of the shelf.

Mårten Claesson:
”The hat is back. For a couple of decades the hat was so out of fashion that many of us believed it was something belonging to the past. But really, it was not so. The hat – whether masculine or feminine – is such a basic piece of clothing or accessory that we forgot it is timeless.

Now, a good hat deserves good care. A hat maker may have put a week of manual labour and a lifetime of experience into your hat. So you want it to last. Don’t just throw it. Don’t lay it wherever. Put it on a purpose-designed hat rest.”

In the size of an A3 sheet, it has plenty of space for both purposes.

Two opposing 45-degree edge cuts. Turn the board and cut again. The proportions of the top surface change depending on which side faces up. But the chopping board can always be gripped and easily lifted. Simple geometry, sculptural form, pleasingly functional.

new eve https://smallerobjects.com/shop/personal/new-eve https://smallerobjects.com/shop/personal/new-eve#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 13:38:25 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=952 In the 1880s pure aluminium was extremely valuable. At the time emperor Napoleon of France even gave his most honoured guests aluminium utensils, while the others had to make do with gold.

Since then of course, aluminium has found its way to technical constructions and is industrially formed and manufactured, but seldom seen in a context where aluminium’s beauty becomes apparent.

The New Eve bracelet is formed of extruded aluminium. By cutting the raw extrusion at an angle and in different widths, geometrical variation is reached. The bracelet is then hand polished to a natural shine.

For manufacturing reasons the bracelet is only available in one size. This means that the vast majority of men will not be able to wear it, while nearly all women are.

The bracelet was first introduced in an anodised version by Stockholm design gallery Galerie Pascale in 2008. It received the Design S award in 2008 and the Gold Award, Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2011.

Available in 3 or 4.5 (circa) centimetre versions.

It is reminiscent of a gingko leaf’s very particular and beautiful shape. The uchiwa was the inspiration for this set of salad servers.

“The bowl of the spoon of salad servers should be more generous in proportion compared to a normal spoon in order to grasp salad better. Wood adds a texture that prevents the salad from slipping out of grip. For added functionality one of the bowls have drilled holes to allow excess dressing or rinse water to escape,” says Mårten Claesson.

face alu https://smallerobjects.com/shop/living/face-alu https://smallerobjects.com/shop/living/face-alu#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 13:25:03 +0000 https://smallerobjects.com/?post_type=product&p=941 Face is a set of three gently differently shaped fixed cabinet knobs or wall hooks. They are irregular in shape but share the dimensions and the flat, polished front face.

The Face knobs are intentionally designed to create a sense of natural variation. They break the typical repetition created in the application of interior fittings.

“When they are fixed they are always ‘wrong’ always right. They are also inviting and tactile to touch and they add a small visual twist to your kitchen or wardrobe wall,” says Ola Rune.

The Face knobs were designed and are still marketed in brass for the famous Swedish manufacturer Skultuna – one of the oldest companies in the world, founded in the year 1607 as a brass foundry by King Karl IX. Skultuna manufactures the Face Alu in aluminium for Smaller Objects exclusively.

Delivered with screws for both cabinet door and wall mounting.

And there seems to be no stopping of humoristic ideas. Squirrels with their tails trapped. Squeezed, spilling paint tubes…

Or there is the simple, no-fuss wooden wedge.

"There’s nothing wrong with a normal wooden wedge as a doorstopper except… it looks untidy. It’s like this little piece that is never aligned with anything," says Eero Koivisto. And continues: “The actual wedge needs to be there, of course, but the overall shape could be something that is never out of line, like the circle. This way, our doorstop factually adapts to architecture.”

Like with the Smaller Objects Cold Coaster, what is especially appealing with soapstone is its unique permittivity; the ability to hold a temperature. So, placing the wine cooler in the freezer or fridge before use allows the stone time to accumulate a good chill – keeping your champagne or wine bottle cold at the table.

”Tactile and natural. The Cold Cooler’s inherent quality is in parity with any fine wine. Aged for 400 million years,” says Mårten Claesson. Adding, ”and there is no need to fumble with ice cubes or water.”

What is especially appealing with soapstone is its unique heat permittivity; the ability to hold a temperature. So, placing the coasters in the freezer before use allows the stone time to accumulate a good chill – keeping any glass placed on them colder for a longer period of time.

“Chilled drinks on a cold soapstone coaster hold their chill longer than drinks placed on a coaster at room temperature. With our coasters beneath, you can enjoy that cold drink on a hot summer evening for just a little bit longer,” says Ola Rune.

In this case the tones of colour seamlessly fades in and out of each other. Two colours act, at the same time, as a full spectrum and as one shimmering colour.

Depending on viewing position, angle and movement, the perception of the pattern is endlessly evasive and elusive. The break in gradient flow that happens in the seam is intentional and enhances the concept.

Translucency allows for a warm, radiant feeling once candles are lit. The rounded bottom edge helps give the impression of the tealight holders floating just above the surface of the table.

”This must be the perfect gift for anyone, both to give or receive”, says Eero Koivisto who has a life long fascination for white porcelain and ceramics. ”As often is the case, a trio is more dynamic and creates an ambience as opposed to a solitaire”, he continues. Using tea lights candles in transparent cups enhances the warm glow that spreads in the porcelain.

Danish poet and scientist Piet Hein found practical use for it. Swedish architect and designer Bruno Mathsson refined it into the famous Superellipse table. What is less well known is that Piet Hein, in collaboration with architect David Helldén, designed Stockholm’s central square, Sergels Torg, using the superellipse – or perhaps more accurately, the supercircle – for the defining traffic circle.

In its presentation, Hein wrote:
“Things made with straight lines fit well together and save space. And we can move easily around things made with round lines. But we are in a straightjacket, having to accept one or the other. The superellipse solves the problem. It’s neither nor. Yet it is definite – it has unity.”

The Biru* bottle opener combines a superellipse and a supercircle to a harmonic figure that sits perfectly in the palm of the hand.

* Biru? That’s the Japanese word for beer. A well know example of one of many “Nipponised” English words in the Japanese language.
